Don’t forget – we guarantee that you will need to re-design your website at some point. It can be a big revamp, or just re-designing portion of your website. You will be making a lot of changes to the layout and content as you better understand what your website visitors are looking for, and what’s working on your website and what isn’t. Keep this in mind and plan accordingly. We wished someone told us about this back then.
An ordinary member of the general public who knows absolutely nothing about blogging but who is interested in your fitness video or fitness ebook isn’t interested in where you position your sidebar, or what goes into your sidebar, or what widgets work best, or what color palette you use, or what font you use, or whether the offer is above the fold, ………….or whatever else the blogging world thinks the general public want to see.

First, you need to decide what the function of your website will be. What exactly do you want it to do? Will it primarily serve as an online business card, with basic information on you and your offerings, along with a way to reach you? Perhaps you want to capture the names and email address of prospective customers by having them sign up for a newsletter or free report. Or maybe you want to give out helpful tips through a blog, or even sell your products or services online. Whatever you want your website to do, it’s extremely important to determine all the features you’ll need before any of the work begins, or you may end up wasting a lot of valuable time (and money) adding functionality later on in the development process.

Hi Linix, Thank you for your question! We would always recommend small businesses sell online with their own website. Most decent online store builders (check out Shopify) come with excellent blogging functionality, so you can integrate your blog with your online store. This doesn't tie you down to one selling avenue. Good online store builders can provide a lot of help with SEO (search engine optimization) and make sure your website / blog ranks higher in Google, so people can find it in the first place. Your wife wouldn't have to sell many products through her organic coffee brand's online store before the monthly fee looked pretty small. For these and other reasons, we'd always say it's sensible to get both an online store and a blog. With them working in harmony, you have more chance of making a success of your online business I hope this helps and good luck! Fred
Hi David, Thanks for your comment and the analogy! As we say in the article, there are times when we definitely recommend a website designer. But for entrepreneurs, sometimes this isn't a realistic option. We truly do believe you can help your business grow and succeed by using a website builder - we've been there and seen it happen! While there's certainly a time to hire a web designer to make the most of their expertise, website builders are great for opening up the possibility of success to everyone. We believe nobody should be stopped from creating a website because of technical ability, and the same goes for financial situations. Website builders create more options for more people to promote their business online, and we think that's great! Thanks for reading and for joining the discussion, I hope you've found it interesting - Lucy
So what you’re really talking about here are different audiences with different budgets and preconceived notions of the value of design. Companies like Wix and Weebly place a very low value on design. They basically tell their audience that a professional web designer has no value because you don’t need one to build your own “stunning” website. Their target audience is people with zero to very low budget who are easily convinced that design isn’t worth it and they can do it themselves. Larger companies are more apt to understand the value and experience a professional web designer can bring to the table.
The flashy graphics and catchy text you see on websites is only about 20% of what goes into developing the site. Behind all those pretty pages are codes and tags, specifically written to attain a higher placement in search engines, make the pages load faster and be more user friendly. Most beginners and hobbyists lack knowledge in the proper usage of codes, scripts, tags and search engine optimization. If you have a pretty web site, but no one can find it, you lose enormous marketing power.
Chance are “little Johnny, the computer savant” is not going to be able to help you think the way that your average customer or client would think. He can’t; he’s probably still got a lot of MUSH for brains. Didn’t YOU when you were 15-25 years old? Heck, my own brain didn’t clear from an adolescent fog until I was in my 30s. If your average customer or client is in the 25-50 year old demographic and making in excess of $100K a year – do you REALLY want “little Johnny” thinking on your behalf about HOW to get your business in front of those people?

A web designer is someone who has devoted huge amounts of time to staying on top of the latest developments and trends in websites, the way a visitor uses and flows through a website – not to mention the way they will be displayed on a wide range of devices. Their expertise enables them to carefully position information in a way that ensures the user enjoys their experience on the website, finds their eye drawn to relevant information. The visitor is led through the site in a pleasurable way that answers their questions and leaves them wanting to hire you or purchase a product. I cannot stress enough that it’s this function which actually defines the need for a website; to be informative, easy to navigate, leave a professional impression – and to convert potential business. A professional website will turn curious potential customers into loyal paying customers.
I am looking for a full stack developer to start a business relationship with. I have a project vision and design for a web application, but my programming skills are very weak. It would take me years to build a shitty app, I want it faster and I want it to turn out well – if you can do that and you would like to work on a project together for a few
Hi, just came across this article. Its a fantastic illustration of how small to medium sized businesses can use Awards based promotion to get their companies recognised on the 1st page of Google. Awards programmes offer many benefits to winners. After all they bring recognition and you can share the news of your win with your employees, clients, industry peers and target market as many times as you like. Additonally awards offer prestige and status, giving potential customers peace of mind that they are working with a reputable company. There are many types of awards programmes, including those that host awards ceremonies (and you pay per table), organisations that award only their members (and you pay for membership and sponsorship) and those that provide promotional materials. The latter is a great way for those who are unsure about the benefits of using corporate awards programmes because generally nominees and winners do not have to pay a penny to be a participant. Winners often receives online recognition, usually with a reach much greater than their own marketing efforts can deliver. Other free benefits can include the use of an press release. Most participants have the option to purchase additional marketing materials to further enhance their win, if they wish to, for use in social media campaigns, on their own website, email marketing campaigns or in customer newsletters.

It is a common misconception amongst folks who are new to the Internet that you will simply put up the site, end of story. Try to think of it this way: the owner of a supermarket does not build their store, stock it with products and then never replenish the inventory again. Running an on-line business is an on-going process. If your small business will be running an e-commerce site, you will be adding new products, removing old ones, promoting specials and advertising. Even if your website will be purely informational, your site must be in a state of on-going development in order to remain important to search engines (thus gaining good rankings). Informational sites need to add new articles, new lists of resources, new interesting features to make their site useful to their visitors. Because your site will always be ‘under construction’ so to speak, in hopes of always improving its value to the public, you need to have a web designer who is going to remain available to you for these types of updates.
I have an online store on eBay and sell collectible postage stamps from all parts of the world. Their auction site is awesome but their fees are becoming outrageous. When you add that to the fees from PayPal, I’m not sure who I am really working for. First of all, is there an auction house plugin that resembles eBay what you recommend. And secondly, what is the minimum amount of memory my computer should have? I would have about 250 listings at any one time that would last 7-10 days.
The way a lot of people think about getting a new website is, they have a certain amount of money and they think, “If I pay less money for a website, I’ll have extra money left over, therefore I win”. And so they’ll go and get a Square Space or a Wix or a Go Daddy website, and they’ll think because they’ve saved money they’re coming out ahead of the deal.
We have been building custom website applications for customers for years and based on repeated requests such as yours to find quality site design services at an affordable cost we finally developed a totally managed website system where we load and configure your site on our system, show you how to add and edit the content whenever you want and then turn the site over to you.

The Tea Story website tells a story in which the visitor is the main character and can create their own experience. With a simple five-page website design, nothing distracts website visitors from the relaxing experience offered by a warm, exotic cup of tea. Each keepsake container of tea is labeled with “The Tea Story” and offers a customized luxury experience for the buyer, with names like Peach Paradise and Lavender Parfait.

These features are offered by modern site-builders: there are many of them today, but the market leaders are Wix.com, Weebly.com, Ukit.com – they offer users hundreds of free templates and options for customized settings. At the same time, they do not relieve you of the need to take a bunch of routine actions. Moreover, you can choose only the template available in the database and the support service, most often is an automated bot system, and the templates have poor functionality. As result, you get the website that is not unique.
