Expert Plastering Inc. is a well-respected professional plastering company which offers their services in their own local area. They don’t need shopping features on their website, and they don’t need to compete with plastering companies in other regions, states or countries. The function of their website is to offer a portfolio of their work, and to enable customers to contact them via the web. This most simple type of web design helps their company to maintain a visible Internet presence at a fraction of the cost one pays for telephone directory or newspaper advertising. With more and more people turning to the Internet to find local services, a basic website like this is a must for almost any services business. Dentists, lawyers, architects, daycare facilities, landscaping companies and almost every other type of business professional will benefit from even a simple website like this. This type of website is also suitable for non-profit organizations, when the capability of taking donations is added to the site function.
Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.
If you’ve already built a big email list, or aim to acquire lots of new email subscribers quickly, check which tools each website builder offers through the app store to help you scale your email marketing. Squarespace offers integration with MailChimp – a great email tool we’ve used before that’s designed on the same drag and drop principles as website builders.

Squarespace is best for graphic design-focused businesses with visual appeal, like marketing companies, artists, photographers, and designers. Starting at $12/month, the learning curve for using its website editor can be comparatively steeper, but they have built-in advanced design tools like Adobe Creative Suite for editing Getty or Unsplash images, allowing the visual craftsman to design to his or her heart’s content.
Character Traits, Skills, Abilities - Choosing a Website Designer is always a big step for an established business like yours. You want someone who is responsive, gives attention to detail, and shows pride in their work, just like someone who’s been an in-house employee for 10 years. And if you intend to stay connected to your Website Designer for hosting services, SEO updates, Social Media Management, or technical support, this could very well be a long-term business relationship. If you’re anything like us, you prefer to work with someone who exhibits these kinds of character traits, skills, and abilities:

Here's the exception to my rule: It's actually better to have no website at all than to have one that makes your business look bad. Your site speaks volumes about your business. It either says, "Hey, look, we take our business so seriously that we have created this wonderful site for our customers!" or it screams, "Hey, look, I let my 10-year-old nephew design my site. Good luck finding anything!"
Hi Annanda, Welcome to the community, so pleased to hear you have found this article interesting. We could not agree more setting up a website is so important to any future business growth, as we mention in this article, with the internet being so accessible, it now means that it is so important for your businesses to have that online presence. Please do feel free to share with others you feel could too benefit from our content. Thanks again for your comment. Natasha.
This is the exact opposite of mistake #1. Let me start by revealing a dirty little secret when it comes to website design. Most people think, “Oh, I’m going to hire a professional website firm because I want a “real website” As opposed to a Word Press website or something else.” And what most people don’t realize is that all websites are made from the same stuff.
Weebly has been around for a while, and so it’s definitely one of the most popular website builders out there. There are no hidden costs involved in constructing a new website — and although premium and ecommerce versions do exist, a vast majority of small businesses are unlikely to need them. Weebly’s top feature is its intuitive, drag-and-drop interface that makes Web creation dead simple for even the most IT-challenged individuals.

That said, even if your website is responsive, it’s usually a good idea to make some additional adjustments to your mobile site. Your mobile website should make your call to action a central focus, whether that’s getting users to call your business, fill out a contact form, join a mailing list, or make an online order. Remove any excessive details that might make that more difficult.
Even if you decide to build your own website, consider having professional graphics designed for the site; at the very least a logo or brand developed. Using these professional elements can make a huge difference to the overall look and feel. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a professional look over the content on the site to check the quality of the copy, ensure relevant information is positioned correctly, and the user is led through the site in a way that will increase the likelihood of sales.
Great article, comments and discussion thread...thanks to everyone. My question is which of the site builders would be best for constructing a service business (versus selling and shipping a product) where different service event activity dates/times must be scheduled, payments processed and confirmations and follow-up details sent after purchase? Appreciate your insight. Thx!
A website is a marketing and communication tool that belongs to you. You control it and you can use it continually. It is a company asset similar to a telephone or fax machine. You buy it one time and only pay for the service to use it. Websites reach a growing customer base that up until now has remained hidden to you. It also services your current customer base, giving them more options to communicate with you.

Whether you’re interested in learning web design to go freelance or to work for a company, you’ll need to stay on top of your schedule and your projects to be a standout web designer. This can mean getting to know productivity apps like task lists or calendars or, especially if you’re in a large organization, learning project tracking tools like Trello or JIRA. Whatever the tools, mastering the art of prioritizing and tracking your work will be essential for your success (and sanity!) in the busy world of web design.
Don’t forget – we guarantee that you will need to re-design your website at some point. It can be a big revamp, or just re-designing portion of your website. You will be making a lot of changes to the layout and content as you better understand what your website visitors are looking for, and what’s working on your website and what isn’t. Keep this in mind and plan accordingly. We wished someone told us about this back then.

Likewise, getting a real estate website ranked well for “Bombay Beach, California homes for sale” (population 295) is a piece of cake. If you’re a realtor in Charlotte, North Carolina you’ll need to shell out tens of thousands of dollars to rank at the top of Google for even a few important search terms that would drive home buyers to your website.

But there are some problems with this strategy. First, you’ll always be dependent on the social media platform you choose. Algorithms change, rules change, and what’s working one day might not work a few weeks from now (as many businesses who depended on Facebook have recently learned). If you have a website, it belongs to you, and you control the content and the message. Part of the reason you started your own business is so that you don’t have to follow other people’s rules—so why would you just do what a social media platform tells you to?
The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:
There are several services that help you to build your website in a DIY manner. That way you don't have to depend on the designer for every small upgrade and turnaround time will come down drastically. Depends on how much time you want to devote to it but most of these services are pretty intuitive (like leadpages, instapage etc.). Most of them also offer trial version if you just want to check them out.
I need a new website. I need you to design and build my online store. It will include an online shop, that runs smooth , loads fast and easy to use. Will be selling all sorts of things including clothes - need to be able to select size colours, quantity ect , sports equipment , all different stuff , I want to be able to add stuff to it and change what
If the primary purpose of your website is to sell products, you may want to choose a solution that specializes in creating an online store. BigCommerce is an ecommerce software that helps you to create and manage your online store, sell your products, and market your business. It costs $29.99/month and you can even use their free trial, no credit card required.
Website design is child’s play these days. Any web design company who tries to tell you different is lying. You can freely get access to tens of thousands of templates with programs like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and in about a day (for even the least computer savvy person) you can have a website. Website design has gotten SO EASY that Wix, Web.com, GoDaddy and others say that they will actually build your website FOR NOTHING. NO COST. NADA. There are tens of thousands of India-based designers who will build your website for pennies on the dollar.
I need 3 elegant forms built on 3 different pages (different forms but almost the same). They will be (Basic) . (Pro). and (Rocket). Hi Jamie. I am not a web developer (yet) but I am aspiring to become one some day. I am using Django Framwork for the backend. But for the frontend , I am confused. Should I study HTML , CSS and javascript and then build a website (frontend) from scratch? Or should I not waste time , and just get a theme from wordpress? How much control over the look and feel of the website do we have, when we use these themes pre-tailored for us?
I think web designers will always be needed if you really want a bring you website on the first page of search engines….I have never hired a web designer and build my own website for blogging but now I am planning to launch a ecommerce website which needs lot of work…web designers can really help in designing complex website…yes financially one has to be strong to hire web designers…money makes money…if you really want to excel in online business you will need to spend money..!! thanks for this useful post..!!

Webnode offers a dynamic solution for small businesses in need of a simple, online store. The platform’s free ecommerce package includes 1GB bandwidth, 10MB storage space and enables you to sell up to 10 products. In order to expand that store, you’ll need to upgrade to one of Webnode’s premium packages — but its free offerings are ideal for a part-time micro-business.

Some WordPress plugins conflicted with our design.  When we installed some of the tools / plugins, they broke some of the custom features that our developer built. So we had to pay our developer to re-configure our website to make things work. When you’re piecing together tools that are built by different developers, it’s not surprising that some of them won’t work well together. It’s just part of the process, and it was frustrating for us as that added to our mental burden.
Wix is best for businesses that have a specific theme in mind for their ideal website but don’t have coding skills or access to a developer to create it from scratch. With Wix, you can choose from 500+ themes, then customize every inch of them via a drag-and-drop editor you can use to change layout, images, fonts, color, copy, video backgrounds, and more.
Yup. According to LSA’s (Local Search Association) April 2017 report, “The Digital Consumer Study,” 63 percent of consumers primarily use a company’s website to find and engage with businesses. That’s a pretty big chunk of consumers. Combine that with the fact that 93 percent of online experiences begin with a search engine—you do the math. Another compelling reason your business needs a website? Research by YellowPages and LSA found that, on average, consumers use approximately three sources before making an individual purchase decision, and 30 percent automatically strike a business from consideration if they don’t have a website.
