I tell clients that getting a website is like getting a telephone. They both have similar cost structures. The website cost is like the cost of the phone and installation. You pay one time and the equipment is yours. The hosting cost is similar to your monthly phone bill — you own the equipment but you pay for the service of being able to use it. The domain name registry is like the phone number — a unique way to get in touch with only YOU.

I have no experience with blogs other than what I read online. I would appreciate your help regarding a “shared” blog. A friend and I are considering contributing posts to the same blog. Is it allowed? …to “own” a blog together? If so, how would we do it; should we both follow the steps installing WordPress etc. and then one of us create it and the other just logs in with the username and password?

Your website is the first — and sometimes the only thing — your potential customers see when they are searching for your products or services. What type of first impression are they getting when they visit your website? Does your website properly represent your business and make potential customers want to call you, or make them want to look elsewhere?
Not only are all of these people able to see your website, but they can also interact with you through it. Using email, contact forms, guest books, and chat apps, you can talk with customers from the other side of the globe, get feedback about your new products and services, or even ship orders thousands of miles away. And people might come to your website from all different places, using search engines or Google Maps.

Better still, a web designer has the experience to avoid mistakes, know the do’s and don’ts of both planning and building a website – and be able to present your business (your brand) online in a highly professional way. In the age of complex sites, responsive design & CMS systems; they rarely develop a site entirely from scratch. Instead they’ll use “platform” or template from a 3rd party or one they’ve had developed for them (If they developed it themselves, that would make them a web developer!) and then build and customise the “front end” of the website for their client. This could be likened to someone who builds cars buying the engine and frame – then adding all the extra components and finishing touches themselves.

To me, a web designer is skilled in not only modern website design as well as fundamentals of both UX and UI (not necessarily programming, but the visual aspect, as well as understanding flow, and functionality), but also how design isn’t just something that looks good – it HAS TO have a purpose. This is why I feel that web designers should also understand marketing.
Chance are “little Johnny, the computer savant” is not going to be able to help you think the way that your average customer or client would think. He can’t; he’s probably still got a lot of MUSH for brains. Didn’t YOU when you were 15-25 years old? Heck, my own brain didn’t clear from an adolescent fog until I was in my 30s. If your average customer or client is in the 25-50 year old demographic and making in excess of $100K a year – do you REALLY want “little Johnny” thinking on your behalf about HOW to get your business in front of those people?
Bluehost offers .com extensions for $11.99/year when purchased alone but, when purchased with a web hosting plan, they offer the most affordable .com domain names. Their basic $2.95/month hosting plan includes a free domain name for a year, along with other features like website hosting and email. Even if you purchase domain privacy at $0.99/month, the deal is phenomenal for solopreneurs and entrepreneurs on a tight budget.
Use a Theme — The easiest way to create a winning website is to use a website builder. With Remixer, the important structural elements you’ll need for a basic website are incorporated into each of our expert-built themes. That means, all you have to do is choose a design that works with your brand, add your content, and boom, you’ve got a well-designed website — no coding required.
What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
Weebly is a more user-friendly host and drag-and-drop website builder that offers more personalized customer support. This can make it a better option for less tech-savvy users who only need a simple website and want to build it on a platform other than WordPress. However, the price tag is $5/month, and this doesn’t include a domain or email account. Get started for free.
Call these guys. They have a 5 page special going on right now for only $299. These guys did research for me and walked me through the process on how they can build my site and get me ranked high on the search engines. I went live this past week and was listed on google page 1 and in the #1 spot on that page for one of the phrases I wanted to rank highly for. I had no idea about google rankings but these guys knew and did what they were going to do. I was shown how to keep myself in the top spot with a little work. These guys were the best. Visit http://www.websitebuilder.name and ask for Kioky. He designed my website http://www.oceansidehandyman.net and did my site for a deal.
Hi Susan, Yes, in this article we look at WordPress.org instead of WordPress.com, as the self-hosted platform is more popular - and it also avoids confusion between .com and .org! We use WordPress.org in this article to demonstrate the difference in paying for a drag and drop builder, a self-hosted platform, and a custom website. If you'd like to read more about WordPress.com check out our in-depth review here - it covers tools, ease of use, pricing and more. I hope you found this article useful and interesting, Lucy

You have a great business idea, you have great products, and you know that the Internet is today’s greatest resource for potential customers. At this point, you say to yourself, “I need to hire a web designer to get my small business on-line.”

We have arrived at a fulcrum point, where the mainstream corporate power structure has lost its dominant hold on the commercial, and social universe; what people label ‘disruption’ is the grasping of the idea that the gates of media production are now gaping widely-it is up to us to understand this and use every tool at our disposal to build and define our authentic visions.

An ordinary member of the general public who knows absolutely nothing about blogging but who is interested in your fitness video or fitness ebook isn’t interested in where you position your sidebar, or what goes into your sidebar, or what widgets work best, or what color palette you use, or what font you use, or whether the offer is above the fold, ………….or whatever else the blogging world thinks the general public want to see.
Though not a web-hosting service, Template Monster is a great option for business owners looking for themes at varying prices. So many times people are faced with dealing with foreign countries to purchase things. Here at Build Websites Cheap we take that risk away. We actually build your website and show it to you before we charge you for it. That means that you are not sending money to unknown places and hopefully, just maybe seeing something in return. So if you want a website, here is a place where you get one-on-one correspondence with an American that understands, and speaks English.
Thank you for sharing with us. It's a great article. I start my website design business after being a Graphic Designer for 15 years. How much charge for website design is the first question with a lot of answers? I design websites in Squarespace. It's beautiful website templates and easy to use for a Graphic Designer. Its painless transition from print to web.
My name is Chad Lowe and I am a professional graphic & web designer based in Eugene, Oregon in the USA. I specialize in brand/logo development but I can complete a wide variety of different projects. I moved to the Pacific Northwest to continue my freelance design career and have previously managed many large-scale print & digital projects for various clients including Warner Bros, Netflix, NBC, DC Comics, Univision and more. I have strong layout design skills and have created and maintained many branded identities and style guides from the ground-up. I love working on illustration projects for both work and play, and I can also design and code responsive websites that meet modern standards. I am able to turn around strong concepts quickly and efficiently and am used to maintaining communication and managing time with many clients and projects at once. Feel free to check out samples of my work in the Portfolio below. I am currently open for all types of projects and would love to hear from you. Thank you for the consideration.
Weebly has been around for a while, and so it’s definitely one of the most popular website builders out there. There are no hidden costs involved in constructing a new website — and although premium and ecommerce versions do exist, a vast majority of small businesses are unlikely to need them. Weebly’s top feature is its intuitive, drag-and-drop interface that makes Web creation dead simple for even the most IT-challenged individuals.
Take your story to new heights with a blog. It’s a surefire way to ensure customers are routinely coming back to your site — something that cannot be underestimated. Returning customers may make additional online purchases — of products or services — and it will keep your business top-of-mind for them. For this example, as a florist, a blog would ensure customers remember you when they need their next bouquet or recommend you when a friend asks if you know anyone who does flowers for weddings.
“A website doesn’t need to be built for the purpose of adding new customers. According to the National Restaurant Association, 83 percent of Americans look up dining locations, directions and hours of operation on their smartphones or tablets. Did you ever think that your customers—now and future—may like to see specials and menu items while they’re on the go? What if they’re in a hurry and want to order quickly and leave? What if they want to know your hours and can’t make a phone call? A good website will answer basic questions right away—which could free up time if you’re spending a lot of it answering questions on the phone.
