Your small web business does have one other option besides either going with a template, or hiring a designer with whom you develop a trusting, long-term business relationship. This is to hire a database programmer who will build you a CMS, a content management system. Basically what this means is that the designer builds you your own custom template with which you will be able to build new pages and manage your inventory from the back end of the site. The positive aspects of this are that you don’t have to pay the designer to add new pages and products. However, you will have to become expert at the ever-changing SEO techniques required to get your site ranking well, because that will not be built into the custom template. The negative side of this is that database programmers are very expensive. Why? Because database programming takes a great deal of work! You will need to have a large initial financial budget to secure the services of a good quality database programmer, and because most small businesses don’t have this, it is usually not the best option to go with. Apart from this, if you don’t have a relationship with the designer you hire and something goes wrong with the template they’ve built you, you may find yourself on your own. A quality database programmer will not leave you in this awful situation, but a fly-by-night company will.
Hi David, Thanks for your comment and the analogy! As we say in the article, there are times when we definitely recommend a website designer. But for entrepreneurs, sometimes this isn't a realistic option. We truly do believe you can help your business grow and succeed by using a website builder - we've been there and seen it happen! While there's certainly a time to hire a web designer to make the most of their expertise, website builders are great for opening up the possibility of success to everyone. We believe nobody should be stopped from creating a website because of technical ability, and the same goes for financial situations. Website builders create more options for more people to promote their business online, and we think that's great! Thanks for reading and for joining the discussion, I hope you've found it interesting - Lucy
Many small business owners want to wait before committing to a fully-functioning shopping cart for their website. In the case of our client, Classic Quilts of Vermont, her needs are met by simply presenting her products, and allowing customers to phone or e-mail her to make a purchase. Many artisans prefer to go this route, especially when they are just starting out in the Internet marketplace. Some small business owners will offer a form on the site which the customer can fill out, print and fax to them, or simply e-mail to them. Solutions like these enable the business owner to do business without a shopping cart, and while this may not result in the same volume of sales you will experience with a more complete store checkout, it can be a good way to start your small business on-line.
If website is the core of your business- like e-commerce, where every aspect of the site, starting from page loading time to design, SEO etc. will determine the eventual success of your business I'd suggest hire a professional firm and leave the CMS platform to them. They'll most probably use Wordpress but it doesn't matter to you as long as you get timely support. WordPress controls nearly 60% of CMS market and nearly 30% of all websites run on WordPress. So, finding WP developers etc. is pretty easy.
Also, don't be so quick to dismiss your product as one that can't be sold online. Nowadays, there's very little that can't be sold over the internet. More than 20 million shoppers are now online, purchasing everything from books to computers to cars to real estate to jet airplanes to natural gas to you name it. If you can imagine it, someone will figure out how to sell it online.
The service was excellent! Every question we asked was answered promptly by friendly staff, and we absolutely love our website and logo designs. The design team was easy to work with and took our direction well. They were able to organize even our most vague concepts and add their own creativity to bring our vision to life. We highly recommend Deluxe.
From dating to dry cleaning delivery — it seems like everything is done online these days. We always have our phones with us (literally ALWAYS), so to reach the most customers, you absolutely need a website for your business. It’s simply not feasible to not have some connection for your business on the interwebs these days. But what makes a business site successful? And what’s the easiest — and most cost-effective — way to create one if you don’t have any coding experience or a web developer on call?
When you control the tools, know the field and have your own website, it's time to start working on projects for others. First thing you have to do is decide whether you want to work in a study or agency or as a freelance designer. Either way, there are some things you have to take into account if you want to be taken seriously as a web designer. Build a portfolio site and keep it updated. Keep in mind that you're working in a constantly changing field, what three years ago was in fashion may look outdated now, so showcasing your most recent works is crucial to cast a professional image. Analise your work, know what you can or can't do, where you want to get and what you are willing to learn. Being aware of your skills is important to put a prize on your work and market it. Don't underestimate yourself, but remember that your first jobs are not about making money, but gaining experience and contacts. Design is a very subjective matter and web design is no exception. If you want to get the job, you must learn how to sell yourself. Work on your communication skills, create a personal brand, market yourself and remember to be organized and learn from your experiences, take problems as opportunities to learn and improve yourself as a professional designer. Now you are on the way to success, remember it takes patience, nothing good comes easy. Have a positive attitude and enjoy the ride.
While review sites and listing services are a great way for in-home service providers to get discovered, those kinds of listings should really lead the viewer to a site where they can learn more about the person offering the service. When a customer is considering inviting someone into their home, they will feel much more comfortable if that person has a professional, informative website. This is very important, as small business consumers report being less likely to work with a business if they have a bad impression of their website.
need 5.5x8.5 booklet made for our clients and looking to have about 6 pages front and back to make 12 total 3 full size pages. This will show the company profile and its unique skills that the company offers. Looking for a modern look, someone who has experience and can do this right away. We love Squarespace for lots of reasons, but one stellar feature they offer is easy integration with third-party apps, like Mailchimp. It’s all plug-and-play, so you have more time to work on your actual business and spend less time worrying about how to make your newsletter work within your site. For this example, here’s how I connected Mailchimp to the Hyde template:
Not only are all of these people able to see your website, but they can also interact with you through it. Using email, contact forms, guest books, and chat apps, you can talk with customers from the other side of the globe, get feedback about your new products and services, or even ship orders thousands of miles away. And people might come to your website from all different places, using search engines or Google Maps.
Updated Design Keeps Your Brand Relevant — The tech world is constantly innovating, and you need to stay in the game when it comes to design trends and best practices. For example, here’s how Google and Facebook, two of the world’s most popular websites, looked when they first launched. Imagine how successful they would have been if they never updated their look and feel. Yeah, it’s not a pretty picture.
My name is Jamie Spencer and I have been building websites since the beginning of the internet ( shows my age a bit! ) I’ve also been blogging as my main source of income for the past eight years. You may not sell merchandise on-line, but do you sell something special that people are looking for? Do you ever have a customer say "I came here because you sell ________." For example, a store that sells a line of products or brands that are highly sought after by a faithful following, (e.g. Dept. 56, Boyd's Bears, Hallmark Cards, Red Wing Shoes, certain lines of animal products, clothing and accessories, tools) is going to have potential customers that search the Internet to find out who sells those brands in their local area. Will you be on the search results? Will your competitor be?
This was her reply: "We opened this place as a bait and tackle shop. Then people wanted coffee so we provided that. Then some asked for sandwiches, so we provided that. Later they wanted a few tables where they could sit and chat while they ate their sandwiches, so we got tables and chairs and began doing lunches. That led to dinners. Then we didn't have enough room so we added the screened in porch for the summer. People loved the porch so much that we winterized for the colder months. Now that it's January, we thought we might be able to close one day a week and get some time off. But we can't. We're too busy. We've never advertised and we're tired. If a website is going to bring more people in here — no thanks!"

Yola is a Web-based tool that makes life easy for small business owners who are after a simple, code-free way of producing a professional commercial website. Yola operates a drag-and-drop interface with fully-integrated social features and quite a few handy widgets. It’s worth pointing out that Yola’s free accounts don’t include access to the platform’s useful blogging tool — and so small business owners may ultimately need to go premium in order to unlock Yola’s full potential.
Your website is the first — and sometimes the only thing — your potential customers see when they are searching for your products or services. What type of first impression are they getting when they visit your website? Does your website properly represent your business and make potential customers want to call you, or make them want to look elsewhere?
In the U.S., consumers spent $453.46 billion on the web for retail purchases in 2017, a 16.0% increase compared with $390.99 billion in 2016. Retail ecommerce sales are forecast to grow at a fast pace in the coming years, growing to just over 684 billion US dollars in 2020. In Canada, ecommerce spending was $27 billion in 2015 and sales are expected to total nearly $40 billion by 2018. Canadians shop more abroad than they do domestically, with 67% of purchases going to other countries (PFS). Obviously consumers want online options.

❝ My Deluxe rep simply listened to what I was looking for in a new website. She didn’t try to sell me anything – she listened – and wanted to know what I had in mind. She was kind, patient, efficient and super-responsive at every point in the development process. Any concern, any question, was met with an e-mail or phone call, the very same day. … I’m so proud of my website, every time it comes up on my screen. ❞

I have tried and tried Go Daddy and while they have phenomenal tech service people, I tried to use their site builder and loved the fact that everything came with it, from hosting to email, to SEO and more, it costs (NOT FREE) and the font was so small I could not read it with my glasses even though I don’t need glasses, and then changed to the lesser of the two choices they have website builder and that was exactly the same, cannot enlarge the font or the whole page enlarges but not the font and make page smaller, font still stays the same. Spent way too much wasted time and sad to say will cancel tomorrow to use (as my feelings tonite tell me to do) site builder.
Or you can install the CMS manually if you want to change some default features in the course. First, you upload engine files to your server, then create a database and database user. After you’ve assigned the user to the database, just open your site url and follow 2 – 4 installation steps (like adding your site name and filling in other details). There it is.
